GIRLS IN ICT DAY NEPAL 2025

BACKGROUND

International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated worldwide every year on the fourth Thursday of April (24 April 2025). Girls in ICT Day provides an opportunity for girls and young women to see and be exposed to the benefits of ICT in enabling their career and aspiration. To date, over 417,000 girls and young women have taken part in more than 11,590 celebrations of International Girls in ICT Day in 175 countries worldwide.

The ICT sector is a growing sector for education in both developed and developing countries. This means that qualified female students in technical fields worldwide have significant opportunities available to them. These are excellent opportunities, particularly for highly skilled girls and young women, who are still a minority in STEM education and careers. Developing initiatives and activities to promote and encourage girls to take up studies in STEM and ICT is hence a requirement.

Girls in ICT Nepal

The ITU Area Office for South Asia & Innovation Centre (AOIC), Delhi, will organise the opening of the Girls in ICT Day Initiative under this year's theme of Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation in partnership with Nepal Telecom Authority on 23rd May 2025, at Hotel Himalaya in Kathmandu, Nepal. In an increasingly digital world, equitable access to technology is not just a matter of connectivity, it's also a matter of opportunity. This year's theme underscores the critical need to ensure equal and equitable digital inclusion for all young women and girls, particularly those in vulnerable situations, within the digital transformation process, to drive meaningful global connectivity and foster a barrier-free digital ecosystem that will contribute to sustainable global growth.

The Girls in ICT Day aims to empower girls and young women aged 12–24, including those from disadvantaged communities, remote regions of Nepal, and persons with disabilities, to pursue studies in STEM, boost their digital skills, and embrace technology safely and meaningfully. The event will be held in a hybrid format, extending its reach across South Asia to ensure broader participation. Following the launch, a series of hands-on training programs will run from July to September 2025, equipping hundreds of girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to lead and excel in the digital age.
